I don't know if I have ever heard an electro masterpiece start out with a beat box. Fari Soldi take no time dropping into their "Yo! Raps Remix" of Mothers of Charleston song "Taxi Driver". From Beat Box to Hip Hop to Frisco Disco they get things started fast and furious.

I look forward to the Fare Soldi Carpi Sonne Mix every year. Its always jammed packed with their completely original and unique remixes. They also feature the hottest sounds out right now.

Case and point is the Roy Booge Brukup of Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time". Remember the Time is probably my least favorite Michael Jackson song. Something about the video left a bad taste in my mouth still many years later. I can't get the horrible image of Michael dancing around as an pharaoh out of my head. But when they dropped this track, I literally was frozen in disbelief. Not only was it good but it fit Fare Soldi's crazy ass sound perfectly.

Capri Sonne 2011 picks up right where they left it last year. If you start listening in your cubical make sure your co-workers are not around. Trust me, I have gotten more than one funny look as I fidgeted uncontrollably in my seat as Fare Soldi pumped through my headphones. I can't wait to get in my car, roll down the windows, turn it up and enjoy the open rode. I hope you enjoy this beauty of a mixtape as much I have in the past 24 hours...

It Came From the Cloud: Monday Mixtape Edition

This fantastic mixtape from Anoraak is right in my wheel house of music. When I was younger, I used to think my brother's taste in House music was so lame. It was "old guy" electronic music for me. I used to think, what's with all these vocals and two step beats? At that time I was listening to furious drum and bass. The grimier the bass lines and the faster the beats; the better. Talk about polar opposites! This House music was for old people... Fast forward ten years and now I am that old guy and feel bad for dissing my brother.

So what exactly am I talking about and what does it have to do with this mixtape. Let me first say that this mixtape is not house music centered but features some smooth vocals. It starts out fairly poppy with some crossover electronic music. Anoraak then progress into some serious dance music of the disco/house/electro variety to finish it off. These types of tracks suit my old man ears I guess. The most complimentary thing I could say is if I were to make a mixtape, these are the types of tracks I would play. It has been on repeat for the last three weeks and I hope you check it out...

Anoraak is an electronic/pop artist from France with two great full length albums under his belt. Djing isn't his main stick but he does an really awesome job putting this mixtape together.

Japan has been in my thoughts and prayers since I woke up Friday in horror. I couldn't believe I was watching entire towns being washed away.

I blog about music and try to keep this blog clutter free. No one cares what I ate for breakfast or the most recent "hardship" at work. Basically all of that non-sense is a bunch of bullshit when you think about real hardships, like your town or city being washed away.

When I was 13 I learned the hard way what it was like to lose everything. I rode out an 8 hour category five hurricane that left me shipwrecked and homeless on a deserted island. When we were rescued I had my family, our dog, and the clothes on my back. I was alive. I still had family and we had relatives that housed us when we returned to the states.

In Japan there are survivors that have the clothes on their back. Whole families have been washed to sea and their relatives homes went with them. In retrospect, I was very lucky. I can't imagine the pain an entire country is dealing with in the days since the waves.

I found the RZA on Soundcloud just a few minutes ago before I started writing this blog post. He released a Tsunami inspired track two hours ago. It beautiful and reflective. It also allows me a music forum to express my prayers for the Japanese. God bless the thousands that perished last week.

Lykke Li - I'll Get Some

I have had two weeks to fully digest the new Lykke Li album. Yes, it is an entirely different sound. The seemingly young and innocent Li grew up with her newest album "Wounded Rhymes". Even her singing style transformed from her girlish whisper into a strong female lead voice.

The content is more mature and the sound is BIG and polished. At times she almost sounds like she has been transported into a Pains of Being Pure at Heart meets Peter Bjorn and John recording session. There is a soft velvet fog over the entire album. Its lush and over the top. Its perfect. Fans of hers might scratch their head after watching "Get Some" but give the album a chance. She will win you over again.

SBA: First off, congratulations with your blog's first compilation album. Just based on the mini-mix and title alone "Transnational Dubstep", it sounds like you are going to be featuring artist from around the world. How did you got about finding these artists?

DJ UMB: Thank you.

Most of the artists on the compilation I discovered almost 2 years ago or some discovered me knowing what I was into. Some like Celt Islam, Bandish Projekt and Barbarix I’ve known personally and for a longer period too. Others I found on soundcloud and some were introduced to me by various people in the industry after they heard my mixxtapes.

I’ve been into global sounds for as far back as I can remember. There’s just something about music from foreign shores that excites me so much and so I have always been interested in that. I suppose in way, it’s my way of finding my own utopia on this earth through music.

For me, as a DJ, I have always found African, Arabic, Indian, Balkan, Latin and Far Eastern sounds far more fascinating and when fused with Western beats, it’s like my idea of heaven.

Also for me, it’s like to trying to paint the kind of world I’d like to live in through music. Where there is no prejudice, racism and intolerance and where people take each other for what they are without pre-judging on the basis of skin colour, ethnic/religious background or nationality. It’s a perfect world for me. I know it sounds a bit hippy but there isn’t anything wrong with that in my opinion and I just want to live in that kind of world.

SBA: With such an international vibe found on generationbass.com it seems that you are on top of the global movement. Where in the world is the next hot spot for bass music / dubstep productions outside the US / UK?

DJ UMB: Mexico seems to be doing its thing atm, not with dubstep but with Tribal Guarachero/Hurrache, 3ball & Pre-Hispanico which seems to be some of the most exciting new stuff coming out at present. However, there is a dubstep offshoot too created by Sheeqo Beat called Guaracherostep!

Of course the States too with Moombahton and in the Netherlands with Monsieur Munchi who is gonna kill it in 2011 with Moombahcore!

Moombahcore is gonna be one of the next big Dubstep sub-genres, created by our very own Generation Bass genius Munchi.

Munchi is Holland’s next Tiesto, with one major difference, he’s gonna piss all over him!

Africa is still doing it on so many levels with stuff like Kuduro and also South Africa with it’s sublime deep house and shangaan electro.

I think we might see some very interesting dubstep coming from all over the world in various forms!

WORLD IS CALLING TRANSNATIONAL DUBSTEP (NOV 2009) by djumb

SBA: In Atlanta, Dubstep is now becoming the sound of the counter culture. When I was growing up it was punk rock that the displaced youths were gravitating to. Now it seems like Dubstep is becoming that scene here. What is the Dubstep scene like in Birmingham / Britain?

DJ UMB: Yeah it’s still pretty underground and you’re right. For me, it has that same kind of tribal element that Heavy Metal had way back in the 80’s.

In London the scene gravitates more towards the deep soulful/post Dubstep club vibe and producers and dancers are attracted to that.

In Birmingham and other areas, the more brostep/popstep type of vibe seems to be most popular with artist like 16 Bit, Datsik, Flux Pavilion, Bare Noize etc etc killing it.

SBA: What direction you see Dubstep music going in 2011?

DJ UMB: I think the more poppier elements, Magnetic Man, Nero etc etc will solidify and start becoming very commercial worldwide and not just in the UK.

I hope for more song based compositions like James Blake (without the hype) and our boy GoldRush who is demonstrating melodic/romantic song based dubstep/bass .

I think there will be a movement towards more chill out grooves as the brostep will force that to happen.

I feel there will be far more Global/Transnational experimentations with it too and so I still see a very exciting future for it.

Also of course, I’ve already hinted at Moobahcore and that’s already being confirmed as dubstep heads are gravitating towards it .

Skrillex is playing out Munchi Moombahcore tunes!!! Skrillex is in the process of creating original Moombahcore tunage himself!!!!

So, remember that word, MOOMBAHCORE!

POPSTEP DUB SYMPHONY VOLUME VI [HippySTeP] (DEC 2010) by djumb

SBA: I first heard your work on the Maddecent blog during the World Cup when they posted your African Deep House Mixtape. How did you get linked up with those
guys?

DJ UMB: We’ve been following Mad Decent from the early days of the blog and you just get to know each other, it’s inevitable.

We’re at a stage now we seem to be giving back the influence they gave to us in the early days but of course we’re no way near being on the same level as them from a commercial perspective. Diplo’s become very bankable and has a huge and very celebrated musical history behind him.

They’re signing a lot of the talent we’re breaking and also showing us a lot of love on their blog and that is appreciated. Man, I think we do deserve it too as we’re not just following. Indeed we are leading the way in a tastemaker way and doing things our own way too.

HOUSE OF AFREAKA VOL II - THE DEEEEP HOUSE SESSIONS (JULY 2010) Free track but click BUY 2 get free! by djumb

SBA: I really like the multi-genera dubstep sounds on Transnational Dubstep ranging from Indian influenced to Jamaican in sound. Were you exposed to global music growing up or is that something you grew into?

DJ UMB: I’ve been Global/Transnational from day 1. I had no choice. I am a product of post-colonization and my parents were asked come to the UK from Kashmir in the 60’s. I was born and brought up in the UK feeling very English but not feeling fully accepted by everybody because of my background. This did not manifest itself in an overt racist way (occasionally it did but not too often) but in a more unwitting way. So I found solace in Transnationalism, I prefer to keep company and socialize with people of all national backgrounds and I always found their music/cultures enticing and attractive. It’s my world and that’s how I’d like to see the world and society progress, where we are all, ONE!

SBA: What types of music influenced your production and dj style?

DJ UMB: Great quality music from all over the world. It just needs to hit me emotionally or physically.

French DJ Claude Challe was really the guy who was the most influential person to get me into dj’ing though his creation of the Buddha Bar sound. He was one of the first guys, after David Mancuso, to really give music from around the world any credibility in the dance world. You know the guy has sold over 10 million albums as part of the Buddha Bar brand and man that is HUGE!

I love all sorts of stuff really but for mixing, obviously something with consistent ranges of Bmp makes the task of mixing hugely enjoyable. I go for melodic stuff and always try to create a journey when laying down a mix to listen to. Live, it’s different as the main task is to get people moving.

House music was really the first thing that grabbed me, dance music wise and essentially some of the House inflected with a global feel in some way. But since then I’ve got into all sorts.

SBA: Your profile says that you have been djing for 6 years now? Are you a vinyl guy or have you moved onto laptop technology? What type of equipment / software are you using now?

DJ UMB: No I’m a strict CDJ guy. I don’t use vinyl and I’ve never used a laptop in my life to dj with, I wouldn’t know where to start.

I still use CDJ’s.

For production I just use my mind and somebody else does all the hard technical work..ahahahaha I don’t have the time to be a fully fledged producer and I don’t want to be either. I’m the “ideas” guy!

SBA: I am always interested in Dj's favorite artists. Who are your favorite producers / artists out there? Do you have any "guilty pleasure" artist that your fans wouldn't expect?

DJ UMB: Favourite dj’s – Claude Challe and you know I never listen to many dj’s at all.

Favourite producers – At the moment it’s guys like GoldRush, NastyNasty, MartyParty, Schlacthofbronx, Liquid Stranger, FLeCK, Celt Islam, Bandish Projekt, Datsik,.

Guilty pleasures – Dj Cremoso, a guy who does cheesy covers of pop tracks in a Brazillian style called TecnoBrega.

Favourite artists are peeps like Zeppelin, Tom Waits, Cowboy Junkies, Radiohead, Rush, Prince, REM, Flaming Lips etc etc and I love bands such as The Fleet Foxes and so at present anything with a baroque gothic vocal harmony is my guilty pleasure.

SBA: You spin a bunch of different Generas. Do you have a favorite to listen to or a favorite to mix?

DJ UMB: I love mixing dubstep atm and also Moombahton/Moombahcore and Deep House!

SBA: If you had the chance to spend an afternoon with one musician living or deceased, who would that be?

DJ UMB: I’d love to spend an afternoon with Jeff Buckely listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

This video is always the easiest ways to get me to shed some tears. Buckley was not just a vocal/song-writing genius, he was a genuine, sincere and passionate music lover too! He knew the truth!

M.I.A. - VICKI LEEKX MIXTAPE by Pretty Much Amazing

So far M.I.A. has been one of the real surprises of 2011. She released her Vicki Leekx mixtape on December 31, 2010. The album's concept is drawn from the Wiki Leeks scandal that still is going on today. The last I heard, Julian Assange was runner up for the Times person of the year. Well, I am throwing in my vote for Vicki Leekx to be the mixtape of the year.

M.I.A. hasn't gotten the best press in the past year. Her album Maya wasn't received well with the public and the critics. I was one the initial haters out there when I first heard it. The sounds were so foreign. The concept was so abstract that it took me multiple listens to even start to tolerating it. I have to admit that there are songs on the album that I automatically skip. But there are others that are some of the best work she has ever created in her eleven year career.

The thing that separates M.I.A. is fierce independence and belief in herself. She does what she wants and never apologizes for it. Maya shared the 2010 demo version of the album with friend and long time producer Diplo. His now famed public criticism of her new work was brutal. "Tell me why does it sound like a toilet just flushed at the end of 'Tell Me Why'???? Cuz rest of album is a turd." Hearing criticism from the man that helped shape her early sound and created most of her street credit didn't deter her.

The album was released as is and the rest is history. The single Born Free horrified most that watched it. Graphic images of executions and persecutions of little red headed children isn't normal for most Americans. This imagery is not far from being biographical. In Maya's early youth, her family went into hiding from the Sri Lankan Army during their civil war. Growing up in a civil war environment where the government attacks its owns people, sheds much light on this album's first single.

Unfortunately, that one video lost most of the momentum for the album. By the time she started releasing the real gems of the album like, XXO, many had lost interest. Then she dropped Vicki Leekx out of no where.

Vicki Leekx will re-energize M.I.A. fans that she lost in the last year. Its 36 minutes of old and new. Remixes of old tracks. New tracks that have never seen the light of day. It's classic M.I.A. in sound. It's got just enough edge to keep the underground heads wanting more but enough pop-swag to entice new listeners. By the time she drops "fresh sway" 21 minutes in, the hairs on the back on my neck couldn't get much higher. The beats don't grind on your nerves like some on her last release but instead move your feet. The transitions between tracks are seamless and most importantly when Vicki Leekx ends, you are left wanting more...

For having 8 months of airtime on soundcloud, it is a shame that most of their tracks haven't gotten more play.

I have been fans of Fare Soldi for at least two years now. The thing I love about this Italian duo is that they have a definite "sound." Not matter what genera they are remixing, you can hear a track and instantly pick them out. Santana Pasta and Luka Carnifull got a cool disco / house vibe that make sitting still while listening to their music impossible. They can take the biggest sounds in electronic music and make them better.

Barbra Streisand- Duck Sauce (Fare Soldi - Duck Soldi rmx) by FARE SOLDI

Fare Soldi isn't only just about remixes though. Their production tracks can be heard throughout the dance floors of Europe and the USA. They have the ability to bring that disco feel without sounding dated. Their music would work as good in the 70's and 80's as it does today. Make sure you listen to all their soundcloud tracks because there is just too much great music by them to fit in one post. They also have some fantastic mixtapes if your in the mood as well.

Bowski "WeAreBlahBlahBlah Mixtape EP"

I found this mix by Bristol's Bowski, on WeAreBlahBlahBlah's soundcloud page. To be honest with you, the reason I was drawn to the mix was the 2 Bears track at the end of it - which was one of my favorite tracks released in 2010. The rest of the artists in the mix were pretty much a mystery.

The mix starts with percussion build up and then drops a nasty upright bass line that will rattle your car if your not careful. Next a strange organ loop that sounds like something you would hear in the 50's between play acts on top comes in. I was instantly intrigued about this mix. As unfortunate as it is, many dj's can lose a lister after just one song. I am glad this Bowski didn't loose me in this case.

After the second song "Bartok", which has one of the most ominous sounding horn loops that gave me chills the first time i heard it, I was already sold. The bpm never let up. Its almost has a tribal feel at times.

I love how the mix keeps building until the half way point. The music turns almost chaotic but just for two or three minutes, then it slowly starts to unwind. By the time 2 Bears track hits, it has almost turned into a downtempo feel. The last track "Islands (Noze Remix)" by Caro lets the mix blissfully fade away. It has everything that I look for in a Mixtape - great memorable tracks, progression, diversity, and structure. I hope you all enjoy.

These guys and gals from Brooklyn have to be one of my favorite finds in 2010. Not by any stretch are The Hundred in the Hands a new artist but they are new to me. They passed me by with as much music I digest every day; so they may very well be new to you also.

I strongly suggest you buy their self titled album off the Warp Record Label. It's good old fashion electro / rock goodness. Reminds me allot of the sounds of Ladyhawke and some of the more light hearted Ladytron. Great rhythm. Good vocals. Nice instrumentation and hooks that just won't get out of your head. I have owned the album for a few weeks now and I still must listen to it everyday. Sometimes I wonder why I continue to search and search for music and on days that I find bands like this; it all makes sense. Here are some bonus tunes from my soundcloud page. I have to give a shout out to MashKulture for posting this video today. Mount Kimbie was one of the best groups to drop an album in 2010 and am very happy to see them getting some more buzz.

This official video dropped in the middle of December and is a damn shame only 3500 peeps have watched it. The entire video is made up of still shots in strange mash of stop motion, flashes of messages, and a movement to the beat. I found it to be even better watching the second time.

My man Merkatroid best described Phaeleh ,pronounced "Fella", as baby making music. Matt Preston's music is sensual. Its is definitely sexy. I guess it is still considered Dubstep. The more and more I learn about this genera the more I am intrigued to hear more. I love the sweet melodies Phaeleh uses over the strong Dub/Reggae influence. The album Fallen Light grows on me each time I hear it. I strongly suggest you check his SoundCloud Page out and hear more.

Jokers of the Scene have started out the new year with an entirely different sound then what I remember. Their newest mix is dark, minimal, and full of soundscapes...

I spent today in bed with a fever and the rain pounding on the windows. The dark and gloomy start of the new year was the perfect back drop for the Jokers of the Scene Mixtape released 10 days ago. At the time I had no idea about the history of this mix. Know that I know it just makes it more epic.

It feels like Christmas has come again! Sound Cloud has released an official app for android and it blows the pants off the paid app I bought months ago. You got to go here to check out all the features but it includes a playable dashboard, all the favorites and uploads you create, plus a record and search feature. For FREE. Sound Cloud you made my 2010 very enjoyable and now I will have you everywhere in 2011.

I also saw that Red Bull Music Radio finally released a mobile app for you Android operating people. This is the one feature that made me really sad when I play with my Fiancee's iphone. Now I got that too! To find it just search for Red Bull Music Academy in your market place for the free download. Hell of a last two days for me and my Droid.

I totally believe this female lead electronic / rock outfit will be head lining acts soon enough. The Posies and Brandon Benson was the last concert I went to before heading home to see the family. It was the last place I ever thought I would learn a Thanksgiving Lesson. After the third song the Posies played, their lead singer stopped the set. "I want to point something out to all of you..."

At this point my heart stopped in mid-beat. The entire first part of the set, he kept looking my direction. I always wondered what musicians think of people like me filming them on stage. I started thinking to myself, "Brent, you are finally going to find out..."

He continued, "You all may of not noticed but this lady in the front row [directly in front of me] has been singing every single word of both Brandon's set and ours. I just wanted to let you know that is amazing and the reason that we keep playing music for people like her." He continued to interview her from the stage and continued to thank her for being a fan and coming out.

There were probably less than 100 people in the entire place but that one person made an impression on The Posies. After a career that spanned all the way back to the 80s, I felt that in just those few moments I was experiencing something special and reflective for the band. They could of sold out the Phillips Arena but I truly felt that Bebe in the front row singing her heart out to every song would mean more. Walking out of the Posies I was reminded to be thankful for anyone and everyone who supported me along the way. The Holiday Season is the perfect time to let them know.

Its been a minute since Girl Talk obliterated everything you thought you knew about music. In terms of being able to mash anything and everything, Girl Talk is an absolute expert.

In most of his mixes he mashes three and four tracks together. No genera is off limits. For example he starts this newest mix with Ozzie Ozborne providing the beat for Ludacris. Each mash up brings back everything you loved about music for the last 30 years. 80, 90, and the 00's are forced to get along in a way that only Girl Talk can pull off. The is must have and its free. I absolutely adore the original of this song. After hearing it for the first time, I immediately went out and bought anything Reset! related that I could find. I ran across a remix of this club anthem from last year remixed by Broke One. He totally flipped the script on the remix. The original was a glitched out hardcore elctro banger. This Broke One remix has got swag for days.

Wait for it... This track totally took me off guard. It starts out like something I would hear put out by Aurevore Simone but turn into something a young Kayne West would produce. It is rare that you see SBA post some hip hop up on the blog but this track can't be looked over. The Video is both visually amazing and the track sounds incredibly fresh. Its been a while since I posted a Mixtape up here. Its not like I have been running into a bunch of great mixes and not sharing with y'all. To tell you the truth I have been only been listening to one mix lately and it has been this Midland joint. I really, really love the vibe on this one. The track selection is diverse enough to keep your guessing but each track is similar enough to work together to make a complete sound.

“I think a mix set and a club mix are two very different things and I
think a recorded mix is a chance for you to tell a story and include
more tunes that perhaps you wouldn’t be able to in a club. Some of my
favorite mixes, like the second disc of Joris Voorn’s immaculate
Balance CD or Ewan Pearsons And So To Bed mix both start somewhere
deep and weird and take you through the paces. The idea with this mix
was to try and plot a line through all the bases of my collection,
starting with the slower more eclectic stuff and eventually ending on
what you’d see me playing in the club.

Now after those three exhibits of greatness, you should either A) jumping to concert list and crossing your fingers that these two haven't already played in your town or b) buy the album by finding $7 in the cracks of our couch or in your jeans pockets while doing laundry.

I won't lie to you and tell you that Matt & Kim have done something revolutionary in their third release. They didn't add band members. They didn't add strings or guitar or some crazy shit like that. They kept to what has made them so widely popular.

Great percussion from Kim. Fun synthesizers and melody from Matt. Energy for days. Songs that make you want to dance in the living room by yourself with the blinds drawn. For fans of the band, you will not be disappointed. For new comers, if the two songs above remotely interested you, all the music on the new album holds up to that same integrity. There are no throw aways with this one.

I have had "block after block" posted for only a few days on my soundcloud page and it has already received 1/4 of my total plays. That is incredible. Each time I see the band, more and more people are singing every word. This year is their first headlining tour and from the videos I saw at the masquerade, they packed the place. Next year when they come through Atlanta they will be filling the Tabernacle.

The thing about Matt & Kim, you can't help but fall in love with them when watching them live. My mouth literally hurt from smiling so much the first time I saw them. They genuinely love playing and you can tell by watching them live. That same love permeates through their music. It is this love that continues to build fans at an incredible rate. I hope through this post that I can help them gain another. They deserve it.

It looks like this week's theme is remixes by my favorite artist of my favorite artist. These two together make an amazing track. SBA has been big fans of The XX since their debut album dropped. I got excited when I saw that the one and only Four Tet was applying his spaced out minimal sounds to the ever growing English indie group. Four Tet's version of the song is allot faster than what I was expecting. The remix reminds me of something Latin (almost a spaced out salsa). In 13 hours it has already gotten 12,179 hits on Soundcloud! I hope you take the time to listen and add to that number.

Today marks the second day of my Shit Robot play-a-thon. I have been listening to this album constantly since I downloaded it. It's just plain good old pimp robot shit. I would point out favorites but every track is pretty much incredible by themselves. From the Cradle to the Rave is just a bunch of ill-disco-electro-grime with terrific vocal overlays. The guest vocal spots including Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Nancy Whang, and the Juan MacLean, among others.. Don't believe me?
