Wolf Parade

Wolf Parade - What did my lover say (it always had to go this way) by smithblogsatlanta

I rarely review rock bands here on SBA but this one really has to get some face time. I downloaded Expo 86 by Wolf Parade a few weeks ago and can't stop playing it.

Other than a horrendous first song on Expo 86, the album is terrific through and through. The vocals are so interesting sounding it makes you want more. The mix of classic electronic instrumentation and distortion is intriguing. I really don't know what else to tell you but they rock.

Listening to Expo 86' gave me flash backs to the first time I heard the Editors, The National, and Interpol. Lucky for me, I haven't heard the first two albums so I am going to have some homework to do in the near future. The foursome from Canada is currently touring Europe but I will be watching for US dates in the future.

Snowden's Back

You may be wondering why I am posting a Snowden concert from three years ago... It is because they are back. They may not release a lot of new music (One 5 song EP in 3 years) but they rock. I get excited any time they play and that is happening very soon. Check out Snowden at the Earl on September 25th...

LuvStep Live at Mad Decent Block Party

Luvstep Teaser from flufftronix on Vimeo.

Sorry that it has been a minute since my last post. Get ready to get bombarded with new music. Right now I am literally covered over in new tunes. LuvStep is just the first of many new sounds to share with you.

Although this is a short set is packed with great tracks. I really like that this mix is covered over in tracks and creative remixes I have never heard before. I am not really a huge dubstep fan but this is another mix that is helping change my mind. Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix group of LuvStep is definitely something SBA will keep an eye out in the future.

Yum, Duck Sauce

I give the NYC duo of Armand Van Helden & A-Trak props on their new single. It difficult for a electronic/dico/house group to make a legit mainstream video. Just watch, if this video gets into the right hands, they are going to have an incredible amount of traction. I have been following the electronic-semi-super-group closely after hearing the unbelievably catchy Barbara Streisand jam. I have added the O-God edit in for fun below. Looking forward to more work from them. Enjoy...

Here We Go Magic & The Beach Fossils Live Video Review

When we arrived, The Beach Fossils were only a few feet away relaxing and talking to the crowd . They took that same relaxed attitude straight to the stage. Seeing them preform reminded me of days when I was a teenager, sitting in my friend's unairconditioned garage, watching his band jam out.

Half the band shoeless on stage. The percussion was generated from a single floor drum and snare. The sound was nice but after a few songs I was left wondering if the drummer knew a different beat. I also kept thinking; was the echo on the mic to mask the lead man's singing or do they really mean to sound like that. I was actually interested enough go home and google the band. I soon found out that the studio work wasn't much different.

Here We Go Magic were definitely more entertaining and had a few really good moments. On the self titled EP, they have a folksy inspired blues sound going on. At the Earl, they ended up sounding distorted and incredibly loud. Most of the blame goes to the sound guy who blasted each instrument so loud it was difficult to figure out what was going on. At times the organ keyboard sounded so much like feedback it made me cringe.

But through all that, they played their hearts out. The amount of skill they showed did not go unnoticed by me. The speed and complexity at which they played was really fun to watch. The several epic builds left me smiling ridiculously in the front row. I am very glad I recorded the show. My camera acted like a translator. Watching the set back through the filtered ears of my camera makes me appreciate they did on Friday night even more.

I only have a few seconds before my day starts to get crazy. I wanted to pass along one of my new favorite mixtapes. The Sosueme DJs bring some serious skill from Sydney, Australia.

The thing I love about their mixing style is that the man has no fear. They spin anything and everything. If you can pull off a Michael Jackson/Gwen Stephanie/Major Lazer/heavy metal remix and still keep me listening then you have done a hell of job. This hour long mix is packed full of surprises and its 100% free. Enjoy

Pretty Lights New EP

Pretty Lights - A Million Tomorrows by smithblogsatlanta

Pretty Lights has decided to release three separate EP's this year instead of just one album. The most incredible part is that they recorded all of the material for these EP's while on a grueling show schedule. The idea behind the newest EP "Spilling Over Every Side" is to combine the organic and the electronic. The press release talks about trying to add in multiple styles of beats in the EP and even within the same song. As always, this incredible group's music is 100% free to download. So go download the new EP here and if they come near your home town, GO SEE THEM! They put on a hell of a show.
